Prof. dr hab. eng. Artur Bednarkiewicz group

The interests of Prof. Artur Bednarkiewicz's group are focused on the synthesis, spectroscopic studies and the application of inorganic nano- and micro-crystals (e.g. NaYF4) doped with lanthanide ions in imaging, sensorics (luminescence thermometry, pH measurements), biodetection (FRET, spinners).

The group's research objectives are related to the application of inorganic nanoparticles doped with luminescent lanthanides for imaging and sensing applications - in particular luminescence thermometry (Stokes or anti-Stokes), FRET-based sensing, conversion of luminophore-assisted light to heat, and all research activities are dedicated to different disciplines of biomedical science and technology. Depending on the type of application, nanoparticles must meet several specific requirements. Consequently, our research focuses on theoretical modelling, appropriate design and optimisation of materials, comprehensive characterisation (structural, chemical, crystallographic, spectroscopic, thermographic, etc.), the use of various physical processes, and approaches to the practical aspects of nanoparticle use.

Over the years, members of the group have received numerous research grants (NCN SONATA, SONATABis, OPUS, WAVE-UNISONO, PRELUDIUM) or participated as a partner in international grants (NanoTBTech FET OPEN, COST1403).

Research topics:

  • iMaterials engineering (inorganic phosphors doped with lanthanide ions)
  • Colloidal core-shell nanoparticles
  • α-/β-(Na/Li)(Y/Gd/Lu)F4 with different core-shell internal architectures
  • Luminescence nanothermometry
  • FRET-based sensors - fundamental aspects of LnNPs and UCNPs as energy donors (materials, modelling, spectroscopy)
  • Avalanche photon emission in nanomaterials (new materials, sensitised avalanche photon emission, PA at the nano-micro-bulk scale, theoretical modelling)
